What’s it like to make someone else’s dream a reality?
It’s a rare gift—one that I’ve been fortunate to bestow upon every customer who comes to my shop with a desire to see their vision become a real-life dream car. Of course, it’s not as simple as opening up a catalog, pointing at some parts and paint colors, and saying, “Let’s go.”
It takes many steps to get from the mind’s eye, to the drawing board, and then to the metal shop where my team can put everything together.
First, I talk to the customer and ask them for a detailed description of not just what they want, but why they want it. Are they looking for a show car that’s going to knock out judges at competitions across the country? Do they want a hot rod they can enjoy from behind the wheel on a regular basis? Or are they seeking a combination of the two? The answers can lead us down very different pathways—especially when it comes to important design decisions.
