Over the years, BASF, a world leader in automotive OEM and refinish technologies, has amassed themselves quite a collection of classic and exotic cars.  One such car is the iconic 1957 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, painted with BASF's Glasurit 90 Line of waterborne automotive finish products, which received a complete restoration in 2008.  The restoration was actually documented on episodes of the SPEED Channel show, Dream Car Garage and the final product can be seen below.
At this year's SEMA Show in Las Vegas (November 1st, 2011 - November 4th, 2011), you can see that very same Mercedes in the BASF booth, but it won't look the same.  Earlier this year, BASF asked Chip Foose and Foose Design to give the car a brand new Foose paint scheme and incorporate some subtle, but significant, styling cues.
Most noticeably, the front and rear bumpers were removed and stored, replaced by custom fabricated units which have been artfully redesigned into slimmer, more elegant versions.  These new bumpers fit neatly up against the body for a seamless integrated look.  A slight modification to the signature rear bulge above the rear wheel brings it in line with the front wheel house bulge.  Minor modification to the grille and grille shell still focus on the signature stock version.  The nose emblem has been removed, along with the rear markers, with all bodywork being smoothed.  New side trim, hand crafted from brass stock, has been machined, milled, filed and polished before the final chrome plating.  New headlight bezels have been machined out of billet aluminum and carefully fit to the front fenders, which were massaged for a seamless blend of fender to chrome ring.  New headlights were installed for a clean European look.  A two tone paint job featuring BASF waterborne material combines an upper charcoal silver and a lower bright silver, separated by an interior matching, red accent line, still in the design phase.  A custom made set of springs brings the Gullwing to just the right ride height.  A custom set of Foose wheels shod in Pirelli P Zero Nero tires finishes off the design.
The unveil will take place in the BASF booth (#21458) at the 2011 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Tuesday, November 1st at 3:00pm.
