After an emotional episode of Overhaulin' last week, we found another well deserving father for episode 2 who was was in desperate need of a truck renovation.  Chuck, a retired high school teacher and coach, inherited his 1954 Chevy pickup from his aunt, Cathleen, who originally bought the truck brand new.  Having dedicated so many years to his family, students and community, it was a great feeling to give back to such a hard working candidate.
Aside from the rusted rims, cracked paint and ripped interior, the truck didn't look too bad on the outside.  Once we deconstructed it, though, we found out that a lot of the parts were needing to be repaired and even replaced.  The frame had too much damage, so we found one we could restore from an Arizona automotive junkyard. I decided that the '53 tailgate with its rounder lettering would match the design of this truck better than the original.  We went ahead and cut out the graphic of the '53 and welded it into the bed of this '54.  I had never seen that before, but I sure did like it!  I also found some '39 passenger car tailights that I worked into the rear.  As an added feature to the ride, I hand fabricated custom stakes for the bed.  To obtain a more weathered, vintage look, I added a touch of black paint to the wood.  These stakes were topped off with custom steel plates handpainted by Dennis Ricklefs with the phrase "CS Special" on them, the initials of both the original owner and Chuck himself.  Since Chuck's daughters knew he was fond of stock cars, we found some old school gauges and a stock bench seat for the interior.  The girls also told me that Chuck likes a Hawaiian design so I went ahead and painted some hibiscus flowers on the right side of the glove box in a subtle gold.  This was a nice accent color to the deep burgundy the family and I decided to paint the truck. To maintain a classic look, I chose some retro steel wheels which we topped with black fenders.
I think this Chevy turned out really nice and I hope you liked what we did as well. I really enjoyed taking that first ride with Chuck in his overhauled truck.  We hope you enjoy it and welcome to the family!
Don't forget to check out our newly refreshed Overhaulin page if you haven't done so yet and be sure to tune in again next week on Velocity, Tuesday nights 9/8c, as we take on a Camaro.
