Today is Karl's last day of work and all of us at Foose Design are sad to see him leave, but wish him all the best. Known around the shop as "The Silver Fox", Karl Jonasson was our master machinist and responsible for the fabrication and finish of nearly all the parts, components and brackets you'll find on our award winning vehicles.
Karl was born in Rattik, Sweden and came to the United States in 1973. He first worked in the machining industry and later found his calling in the custom hot rod world. Known throughout the industry for his acute attention to detail and precise machining skills, the pieces and parts Karl machined were more like jewelry. He did all of his machining on standard mills and lathes with no CNC programming. The precision and detail of his finished parts are unparalleled. Karl is widely known for his unique ability to make trim and molding from square brass stock and transform the material into sweeping chrome curves, with a perfect match line to the body surface. He hand fits all the trim using a mallet and stump. This level of expertise and skill can only be found in those who have dedicated their lives to the art.
Perhaps more impressive than his labor skills are his incredible work ethic and integrity. Karl is always in motion, seldom stopping just to talk. During shop meetings, Karl would listen attentively, while simultaneously machining or fitting parts.
Karl worked at Boyd's Hot Rods from 1985 - 1998, then at California Street Rods from 1998 - 2001. During this time, he was an integral member of the teams that built iconic industry vehicles such as Cadzilla, CheZoom, Boydster I and Boydster II. We were lucky enough to have him work with us for the last 10 years, where he was a major component on all of our high profile builds. This includes his our three Ridler winners, Grandmaster, Stallion and Impression. The Impression alone featured over 2,000 hand built parts, most of which were fabricated by Karl.
In retirement, Karl will focus on his hobbies, which include automotive swap meets, vintage trains, and Hawaiian culture . We'll miss you Karl, thank you for sharing your talents with us.
