It was a beautiful day when I took the drive up to Lompoc, CA to pick up Bernie’s ’67 Camaro.  I have my own 1st generation RS Camaro that I really enjoy driving, so I was excited to be overhauling this original. He had taken good care of his vehicle, but I could picture a few ways we could turn it into a special hot rod.   We quickly hauled the car away before Bernie got home.  To his surprise, there was a toy car waiting in its place with a gift explaining that the family wanted to give it a little makeover as a thank you for all he had done for them.  Little did he know, he was about to get Overhauled!   Bernie was a local pastor who had a fondness for charity, so it seemed fit to give back to him and make his dream car a reality.

After talking to Bernie’s son, I decided this Camaro needed a bigger motor, a bumping stereo and a rich but vibrant Foose Huntington blue pearl paint job.  We immediately got to work to transform it into a rally performance style hot rod.  To create this look, we added a rear spoiler, a new cowl induction hood and a black out grill with hideaway headlights. My friend, Dennis Ricklefs, pinstriped the hood to create faux rally sport stripes.  We set a new dash component inside with sharp, double diamond stitch patterned Cobra racing seats.  I decided to incorporate that same pattern on the door panels and back seat as well.  I have to admit I was pretty jealous myself when I saw the new 427 V8 Chevy motor go into this Camaro.  With 480 horsepower, this was going to be a sweet ride to drive.  I wanted to tighten up the bumper so we shortened the bumper brackets, removing the exposed hardware and sectioning the metal.  The 19” Foose Knuckle wheels were placed in the front with 20’s in the back.  Orange pinstripes were painted on the rims to match the hood.  We put in complete TCI suspension components in the front and rear featuring sub frame connectors.  I also added a custom gas filler recessed into the back panel with remote trunk access.

This new ride looked right at home when parked inside Petersen Automotive Museum where Bernie’s special reveal took place.   We asked car legend Barry Meguiar to act as a host on the show "Car Crazy”, and do a guest interview with Bernie about hot rods.  All the hard work really does pay off when you see someone like Bernie get so emotional and be so thankful to everyone on the A-Team who had worked diligently on his car.  He was a big fan of the show and had been waiting for the first episode to premier.  Well, Bernie, now you will find yourself on Episode 3!   We welcome you to our Overhaulin’ family and hope you enjoy cruising around in your new hot rod.

Be sure to watch again next week to see what new vehicle we are going to tackle.
